The England House Bed and Breakfast is located in Flagstaff, a town centrally located in Arizona. Situated at the base of the San Francisco Peaks, at 7,000 feet elevation and surrounded by one of the world ‘s largest contiguous pine forests, Flagstaff enjoys all four seasons in all their splendor. It has snowy winters, beautiful, cool summers, and spring and fall abound with color. Located at the intersection of Interstate 17 and Interstate 40, Flagstaff makes the perfect home base for visiting the many regional natural wonders. These include the world-famous Grand Canyon, Sedona’s Red Rocks, Meteor Crater and many other national parks and monuments, with myriad natural and man-made sights to see.

Flagstaff was founded in the late 1800s by pioneers going west to make a fresh start. On July 4, 1876, an exploration party stopped to camp at a watering hole where our town now stands. In recognition of the country’s Independence Day, the American flag was raised using a Ponderosa pine tree trunk as a pole. The flagpole remained, and people began referring to this gathering spot as the “flag staff.” Over time, the name stuck, and the town became “Flagstaff.”

Soon afterward the railroad came, followed early in the next century by Route 66. Both brought more settlers and played important roles in shaping our town. Explorers, mountain men, lumberjacks, cattle ranchers and cowboys, railroad workers, astronomers and stone cutters all made their mark on Flagstaff.

Flagstaff’s unique Historic Downtown is the heart of our mountain city. A variety of shops — clothing boutiques, outdoor gear outfitters, bookstores, galleries and more — awaits your visit. An array of eating establishments, microbreweries and coffeehouses offer an assortment of dining options. Year-round the historic Orpheum Theater offers international performing arts, concerts and films, and during the summer Heritage Square is “the” meeting place, for live music and entertainment and Movies on the Square, all a short walk from the England House Bed and Breakfast.

Flagstaff is home to Northern Arizona University (NAU), which invites you to enjoy a variety of on-campus performing arts, athletic events and fine arts displays throughout the year. The Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra has been a source of enjoyment, enrichment and pride for the citizens of northern Arizona for more than 50 years. The orchestra plays to full houses in the Ardrey Auditorium on the NAU campus September through April, presenting diverse, world-class programming including classics, pops, dance and opera.
